I’ve got to say that there is so much drivel being written at the moment regarding office chairs, ergonomic chairs, ergonomic workstations, posture and office seating etc. Where can you find the best answers?

That is the sixty four thousand dollar question my friend. The majority of – we shall call them – authors are just trying to get traffic to their various websites so you can buy their office chairs. Nothing wrong in that, after all we live in a capitalist society where every person is trying to make a few bob, but the problem for me is when web designers or ‘writers’ with no real knowledge on the subject pass themselves off as experts in the field.

And what makes me different? You may well ask. I do not claim to be an expert in these matters, although I am learning from someone who is. I have a partner at Posture and Office Seating who has 18 years experience in DSE, musculoskeletal disorders and has advised health and local authorities all over the country on ergonomics for office chair users with a wide range of problems. Coupled with that, he has worked with major office chair and office furniture manufacturers in the UK for many years and knows exactly how the R&D departments work to solve the many problems that we humans can develop through poor office seating and bad posture.

Of course those of us unfortunate enough to have some physical problems, these may range from RSI in the wrist to spondylitis (thought I’d throw in the obligatory bus-word or two) have to be catered for as well. And those same research and development teams have produced some amazing feats of office seating engineering with feedback from the people that go out and see exactly what is required.

Oh how far we have come since those halcyon days in the seventies when I sat on a metal draughtsman stool at a parallel motion drawing board in a draughty poorly lit engineering company. (…During the war…!)

Now if you look at Posture and Office Seating’s website, the lamp logo and the ‘-dse’ in the web address shout Posture and DSE assessment. That’s because that is where the majority of their experience lies, in advising on ergonomic office chair, workstations and accessories to help alleviate or prevent problems like RSI and spondylitis.

Now some Posture and Office Seating’writers’ would just log onto Wikipedia copy and paste the articles on spondylitis and other ailments, and just shuffle a few words around. Let’s just say, if you suffer from spondylitis, you will probably know more than you can read in an ill-informed article anyway, and you certainly wouldn’t go on a website and pick a chair at a whim. Nor would you go to an office stationers and buy a cheap imported office chair. The answer is research or talk to someone that knows. Better still, why not have them come to your place of work and properly assess you and your work-station.

You see this is where I have a problem. Some of these office chair ‘writers’ on the face of it, may seem to know what they are talking about, especially to the layman, but for those of us in the office furniture trade and experienced in such matters they come across as, well; second hand car salesman. There are a few exceptions and one guy in particular seems to know his stuff.I am not saying that you shouldn’t read the ‘other’ office furniturearticles or that you should only read medical experts views or indeed mine, because their few of us around in the industry that are clued up and willing to pass on our expertise. What I would recommend though is to just do a little more research or ask someone that knows about ergonomics and musculoskeletal disorders before you make that purchase.
