First of all the good news: Just because you have a herniated disc does not mean you need surgery. In fact according to most experts only about five percentage of those with back pain require surgery and only after other conservative methods have been tried. However for those five percentage the prospects of going under the knife can be scary. So the question is what are the common types of back surgery and how successful are they?
Discectomy: A discectomy is an open surgery in which a portion of herniated vertebra is removed to ease pain radiating down an arm or leg due to an inflamed nerve. This was the operation I had in May 2009 which I am still recovering from!
Laminectomy: A laminectomy broadens the spinal canal by removing one or both sides of the lamina. It decreases pressure on the spinal cord caused by spinal stenosis.
Spinal Fusion: A spinal fusion is performed using bone grafts or metal devices and screws to connect one or more bones in the spine to increase spinal stability and relieve pain.Nucleoplasty: A nucleoplasty is performed on people suffering from low back pain because of a herniated disc. A radiofrequency energy wand is inserted into the herniated disk to remove material causing the inflammation.
Vertebroplasty: A vertebroplasty relieves pain and supports osteoporotic compression fractures by injecting cement into the vertebral bone.
The average success rate for these surgery is 80%. Of Those eighty percent 10-20% return for another back surgery. Failed back surgery even has a name “Failed Back Surgery Syndrom”. Most back surgeries can take up to one to one and a half years to fully recover. In my own case it’s been nine months and although I am back at work and can do most everything except heavy lifting I still have some pain and discomfort.
